“Water as a Source of Peace” during the 71st United Nations General Assembly

On 22 September 2016, during the High Level week of the 71st United Nations General Assembly, a side-event on “Water as a Source of Peace” took place. This side-event was co-organized by the Governments of Costa Rica, Senegal, Slovenia and Switzerland and offered an unprecedented platform for dialogue on water and peace.

On 22 September 2016, during the High Level week of the 71st United Nations General Assembly, a side-event on “Water as a Source of Peace” took place. This side-event was co-organized by the Governments of Costa Rica, Senegal, Slovenia and Switzerland and offered an unprecedented platform for dialogue on water and peace.

The main objective of this side-event was to enhance the dialogue on the importance of water as a source of peace and identify ways of advancing water cooperation both at the global level and in specific local contexts. It encountered great success, given the number of participants and their representativeness (United Nations Member States and representatives from international organizations) and the substantive discussions that were held.
